Fluid Inclusion Methods

Learn how these small but mighty, fluid pathfinders provide gigantic insights into our understanding of petroleum systems

The application of fluid inclusion techniques to petroleum systems analysis has grown significantly in the last two decades and no place more so than here in Australia.

Fossil hydrocarbon fluids trapped as miniscule fluid inclusions commonly occur in all types of sedimentary rocks and provide unique insights into the development, modification and in some cases destruction of petroleum systems. Novel analytical techniques have provided an opportunity to sample and analyse pristine examples of fluids that have been preserved though deep geological time.

Fluid inclusion techniques provide full-cycle, risk-reducing, information from frontier through mature basin areas, to late-stage field development planning, are applicable to a wide range of geological settings and yield unique information that can be garnered from no other source.

Whilst the industry has enthusiastically embraced the uptake of fluid inclusion data there remains few end-users that have ever looked at one down a microscope or clearly understand the important differences that characterise the plethora of techniques on offer, let alone utilise clear and effective workflows to incorporate these data into a meaningful holistic understanding of petroleum systems.

Ascendience is pleased to provide comprehensive training in how best to incorporate the valuable information derived from fluid inclusion techniques. With deep experience in these matters, compiled from far too much time in data collection, seminal participation in the development of new patented fluid inclusion methods and the direct application of these methods within an E&P company we provide best in class training.

The course provides a review of all common fluid inclusion techniques, examines common pitfalls that can materially impact the understanding of the results and showcases many real-world examples to demonstrate the benefits to enhanced petroleum systems analysis. All aspects are covered from planning a fluid inclusion study, choosing the most appropriate tools, analysing the raw data and integrating with other data types to fully appreciate the significance of results for enhanced petroleum systems analysis and improved outcomes for Play Based Exploration.

Open scheduled training courses will be run on a regular basis but there is also an opportunity to arrange customised in-house training where participants are able use their own companies’ fluid inclusion data to maximise the immediate benefit to their exploration and appraisal programs. In conjunction with our Cyclops Fluid Inclusion Database clients can easily leverage historical data to recognise previously hidden petroleum systems and develop new play opportunities to offer genuine competitive advantage for farm-in/farm-out opportunities, acreage gazettal review or to maximise the understanding of untapped potential in held acreage.
